With the Rio Olympics starting this weekend, we thought it would be a perfect time to point you in the direction of one of our veteran hosts, DJ Lubi. His Soul Rebels show (dive into the archive over here) is a sensationally sun kissed affair that finds the long time collector and selector digging deep into his vast vaults for a splendid array of Latin, salsa and bossa nova beats. He’s also an expert in neo soul, funk, world and hip hop and has been for many years, so his shows are always fun and fascinating in equal measure.
In fact, Lubi is a bona fide workhorse who has spent his life sharing his passion for salsa, whether as a band leader, promoter, or DJ in demand all over Europe. He has also run various labels, has 30 years of experience of putting on his own events all round the UK, is often commissioned to put together specialist and definitive Latin CDs and also sells to the likes of Gilles Peterson.
He was one of the first outside London to promote Afro music events when doing so with Club Afro Latino in Leeds, and when acid jazz came along, he was again at the heart of the scene with various weekly nights all much loved in their time. Gig wise he has brought everyone from Roy Ayers to Terry Callier to The Blackbyrds to the UK and he has been featured on, and produced shows for, Radio 1 many times.
As such DJ Lubi is a real gold medal selector whom we are proud to have in our ranks. If you don’t know, never has there been a better time to get to know.
